The Italian Job
This Victorian house in west London has been redesigned with
Italian-inspired elements and specially commissioned pieces by
Margherita Thumiger of Studio
29 Architects.

Italia was decided upon early in the process. 'The owner
has an extensive library of art books,' says Margherita. 'We liked
the idea of this modern design within the context of a traditional
room. What we loved about this book case was that it's fine but
strong.' The highly polished yellow and bronze are echoed
throughout the house.
A work space with a view (of books)
Don't have a room with a view? Have your work space overlook a
beautiful bookshelf instead. An old, country-style desk stands at
one end of this sitting area, which is used as an occasional work
space. 'In our previous houses, my study was always tucked away in
a room that no one else wanted to use, which was ridiculous
as I am often alone in the house. I wanted to be in the middle
of things. I love sitting in my study now,' says says Lucy
Turvill, owner of this award-winning newbuild in Suffolk. The house
was decorated by her interior designer sister, Virginia

his partner, Eleanor O'Keeffe of 5x15 divide their time between London and a
house in Opio, near Valbonne, in the south of France. There are

micro living: how 2 couples could live/work in 700 sq ft

Having lived in cities like London and Barcelona, where rents and
turnover are high, Mike Davies of Studio P10 wanted to experiment with
creating a small apartment that could be shared by strangers.
With the help of architects Miguel Angel and Elodie Grammont of Miel Architects, they turned a 700-square-foot apartment into two nearly independent micro-studios with a shared kitchen/dining room in the middle. The studios each have their own bathrooms and shower or bath, table for work or private dining, queen bed and a lofted lounge/sleep area. Each side have primary semi-translucent doors which can be locked for personal privacy and a second wooden door which shuts for acoustic insulation.
The space could house 2 strangers for living and working, or even two couples. Or it could be transformed to accommodate a family. “There’s a lot of micro living now”, says Davies “this is really an experiment in flexible coexistence”.

STEP 1

Take inventory. At this point you should only be left with items you truly love, but chances are there are also a few gaps to fill. Read up on wardrobe building and make a list of the pieces missing from your wardrobe. Then, write down every piece that will need a space in your closet. Don’t forget accessories likes shoes, necklaces and handbags.STEP 3
Design based on your space and inventory. You already know precisely what needs to go in your closet—now you need to assess the space you have to work with. One of Lisa Adam’s key principles is to “designing so that you see every item in the closet at first glance”. Following this rule, how can you optimize your space? Are you using the full height and depth of your closet? Think outside the box (or in this case, the closet): use dressers as bedside tables, or install shoe shelves above your vanity like so to make the closet feel less cramped.STEP 4
Determine materials/finishes/STEP 5
Work up a lighting plan. A poorly lit closet is just as unpleasant as a disorganized one. We’re not necessarily talking about backlighting your shoe collection here—but assess what your overhead lighting situation is. Can you upgrade the fixture? Lighting at eye level make fore more flattering light—can you add sconces near your full-length mirror? Do you have a vanity area? Is it well lit? can you add a lamp or sconces?STEP 6
Install your new closet! You’ve followed all the steps and you now have a clear vision for what your future closet will look like. So order the missing pieces, carve out a few hours in your weekend, and get to work. Once the transformation is complete, make sure you adopt a “one in, one out” strategy moving forward to keep everything under control.
